Spotlight on Gregory Mancini, Head of Global Portfolio Management, Equities, Nuveen

Global Thought Leader Spotlight

Gregory Mancini, Head of Global Portfolio Management, Equities, Nuveen

In my role as Head of Global Portfolio Management at Nuveen, I am responsible for overseeing the active portfolio management team that manages close to US$350+ billion as part of Nuveen’s US$600 billion equity business¹. In addition, I act as the co-manager on Nuveen’s flagship Global Equity strategy.

A significant portion of Nuveen’s equity platform serves TIAA's CREF Total Global Stock Account, a 74-year legacy multi-manager fund managing retirement assets for teachers and nonprofit workers. This account serves as the foundational framework for how we approach fundamental equity investing at Nuveen.

My responsibilities span portfolio management, institutional investment performance, risk oversight, manager allocation, commercial growth, and fostering a collaborative culture across our 100+ person team¹.

Navigating concentrated market opportunities

  • The distribution of global market returns has materially narrowed. Market revenue and earnings growth is increasingly being generated by a small group of companies that face into the A.I. vertical either as semiconductor producers or more traditional “picks and shovel” companies that are seeing new revenue opportunities. Deep analysis of this part of the market and conviction around the sustainable earnings power of these  companies is increasingly important in the current market environment.

  • The increasing number of multi-manager and quantitative strategies has materially increased crowding risk given distinct factor and or style performance. An unwind of these crowding clusters (such as in the case of Situational Awareness) can create exciting opportunities for research driven style agnostic active managers.

  • Given consistent and continual geopolitical tensions and policy disruptions, and their inflationary impacts, the next big question will be the market’s willingness to broaden into economically sensitive sectors where the modelling exercise has become increasingly complicated.

Opportunities for sophisticated investors
In a market increasingly driven by non-fundamental participants, near-term positioning, and the churn of global news flow, long-term investors should resist the temptation to chase short-term performance and instead consider adhering to proven processes with extended time horizons.

Gregory will be presenting at Global Investment Institute’s upcoming Equities Investment Forum on Wednesday, 2 September 2026 in Melbourne CBD, Victoria. To register your interest in attending, click here or for more information email zlatan@globalii.com.au.
