Spotlight on Rene Ogunbona, Director, Igneo Infrastructure Partners
Global Thought Leader Spotlight
Rene Ogunbona, Director, Igneo Infrastructure Partners
In my role as a Director at Igneo Infrastructure Partners, I am responsible for originating, executing and managing unlisted infrastructure investments in Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) for our Global and Australia/New Zealand infrastructure strategies, with a particular focus on the energy sector.
I work with a team of over 100 professionals across offices in Sydney, London and New York, who manage four product suites covering global and three regional strategies in the mid-market infrastructure space.
We focus on identifying sectors with strong tailwinds and platform potential, where we can use our sector expertise and active management philosophy to deliver sustained outperformance for our clients.
Expanding opportunities in infrastructure markets
In a world of geopolitical and technological uncertainty and a greater need for sovereign capability and security, infrastructure is well positioned to be an enabler or net beneficiary of the changing landscape.
Most of the major macro issues such as A.I. adoption/disruption, onshoring of supply chains, and energy independence are tailwinds for infrastructure assets. Creating a portfolio with exposure to unlisted infrastructure diversifies against the volatility of traditional public markets.
Large cap infrastructure continues to be an increasingly crowded market with a record amount of dry powder chasing trophy assets, which is increasing prices and compressing returns. The mid-market space is a less crowded part of the market, with strong deal flow and the ability to deliver alpha outperformance.
The infrastructure sector is shifting towards higher returns, which corresponds with increased challenges that need to be managed at portfolio companies. As these assets have higher operational, contractual or even construction risk, having a team to actively manage portfolio companies is critical to mitigating risk and delivering business plan alpha.
Implications for sophisticated investors
For investors, this environment underscores the importance of treating unlisted infrastructure as a strategic portfolio diversifier rather than a substitute for traditional listed asset classes.
The long-term ownership characteristics of infrastructure assets enable investors to position portfolios for sustained value creation and to benefit from enduring macro themes such as energy security, digitalisation, and supply chain resilience.
In addition, rebalancing infrastructure portfolios to include exposure to mid-market strategies can enhance diversification and help mitigate the effects of return compression and heightened competition in the large cap segment.
Mid-market infrastructure offers differentiated opportunities for value creation, particularly through active management of more operationally complex assets, providing an alternative pathway to returns in an increasingly competitive investment landscape.
