Spotlight on Sonia Teitel, Co-Managing Director, Renewables Australia, Octopus Australia
Global Thought Leader Spotlight
Sonia Teitel, Co-Managing Director, Renewables Australia, Octopus Australia
In my role as the Co-Managing Director, Renewables Australia at Octopus Australia, I am responsible for leading our team of renewable energy experts that span investment, development, energy markets, asset management and engineering.
Our team is responsible for end-to-end delivery of renewables assets including long term operations, to deliver Octopus Australia’s renewable energy strategy. This includes optimising our portfolio’s technology mix, geographical mix and generation profile to deliver superior returns for our investors.
Government policy and regulatory landscape
Australia has an increased focus from its citizens to meet clean energy targets which keep us in line with global peers, including reaching net zero by 2050.
As traditional thermal power plants exit the Australian market creating a supply gap, the lowest cost new entrant is renewables paired with storage. This is providing a significant investment opportunity into Australia’s energy future.
Demand for clean energy continues to accelerate
There is accelerating demand for clean energy being driven by electrification, electric vehicles, increased demand from data centres, and corporate net zero targets.
Octopus designs its portfolio to be able to offer firmed green products at a premium to meet this demand.
Energy storage and grid stability products
To support the roll out of wind and solar projects, Australia needs to integrate energy storage solutions into its renewables mix. We are doing this through our hybrid projects and the development of a dedicated large-scale battery in Queensland.
Implications for sophisticated investors
We believe that the best way to minimise the risks and optimise an investment into renewables is to implement the fundamentals of investment, notably through a diversified portfolio.
The above themes present both risk and opportunity and need to be actively managed by a team of dedicated renewable specialists.
We have built our team to include a diverse range of highly specialised skills, including grid engineers, developers and energy market experts to help position our portfolio most advantageously within the market.
Through an investment into a multi technology, multi geographical portfolio of development, construction and operating assets, you can extract superior returns whilst reducing your risk.
Sonia will be presenting at Global Investment Institute’s upcoming Family Office Investment Forum, taking place on Wednesday, 7 May 2025 at the Grand Hyatt Melbourne, Victoria. To register your interest in attending, click here or for more information email zlatan@globalii.com.au.
