In this exclusive interview, Kim discusses how investing in water rights works in Australia, including how it enables farmers to unlock capital from their balance sheets, he explains how water rights are valued and the key drivers of long-term returns in the asset class.
Watch the full interview where we ask Kim:
How does investing in water rights actually work? How do you derive returns for investors?
What is the risk that governments change the rules about water rights, especially if Australia has a run of really bad drought years?
What are the key drivers of long-term returns from investing in water rights?
What is the likelihood of water prices getting so high that irrigation farmers can no longer afford water for their crops and what would be the implications of such a scenario?
Do you get accused of being a “Water Baron”? How do farmers feel about your role in investing in water rights?
How do you value water rights? Is there a transparent market price?
Kim Morison, Chairman, Chief Investment Officer at Argyle Capital Partners
Kim is the principal of Argyle Capital Partners, a specialist manager of investments in Australian water rights. The firm was established in 2007 to specifically invest in water rights as an efficient means to participate in the development of irrigated farming enterprises and increase Australia’s capacity to reliably produce food and fibre for high-value export markets across Asia.
Argyle’s investment activities support irrigation enterprises to achieve highest and best use of water, a key input. This benefits Australia’s farming communities and encourages the sustainable use of its most scarce natural resource.
Argyle is a pioneer of this unique asset class and currently manages over $1.3 billion on behalf of Australian and offshore investors.
Kim grew up in regional Australia and has over 30 years’ experience in irrigated agribusiness, water markets, commodity derivatives, and the international trade of soft commodities. He previously held senior management roles with Macquarie Bank’s agricultural commodities division, Colly Farms Cotton and CSR Sugar.
